Highlights

Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area is northeast of Great Bend in West central Kansas. Birdwatching. There are pelicans, herons, gulls, whooping cranes, migrating shorebirds and more than 30,000 geese in the Fall

Sandsage Bison Range and Wildlife Area is south of Garden City. Buffalo graze here.

Quivira National Wildlife Refuge is near Great Bend. Birds, Deer, Bison, US-56.

Cimarron National Grassland is in the southwestern corner of the state. Its along the Santa Fe trail. There are over 108,000 acres and over 364 species of birds. Wildlife in area: the Rare Prairie Chicken, antelope, deer, elk, buffalo and more. You can hike, bike, horseback ride, camp and do other outdoor activities. The Cimarron River is in the location. There are limestone pillars and scenic overlooks. You can still see wagon ruts left by covered wagons that traveled the Santa Fe Trails.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve use to be the Spring Hill /z Bar Ranch. Its located in the Flint Hills south of Council Grove and north of Strong City on Hwy. 177. Hiking trails and tours of the historic house.
